Main areas of academic interest
 

The social history of the Middle East during the 19th and 20th centuries:
social stratification, rural-to-urban migration, material culture, the diffusion of technologies and mass media.
Also: Islam and society (e.g waqfs, `ulama, as well as Muslim Brotherhood movements).
